Teens And Stress

Stress can be a very detrimental circumstance of a teenagers life but it’s a common misconception that teens don’t really have anything to be stressed out over. Many people think that because teenagers don't have jobs, families to support, and bills to pay that they couldn’t have anything to really be upset or stressed over but this isn't’ true. It’s helpful for parents to think back to how they felt when they were a teenager and how everything seemed so magnified and important then. Our teenagers today face greater challenges than many of us ever had to and it’s up to the parents of them to support them in the challenges that they face.

Some of the things that can stress a teenager out are similar to those that an adult might find themselves burdened by. A teenager with a car payment or other such bills may find themselves stressed out over money. Another teenager might be stressed out because of family problems, concerns about friends, pressures from school or parents, or worries about divorce, health, or other life challenges. These things might not seem to be very consequential on a day to day basis but they can be very overwhelming to a teenager that hasn’t yet learned to cope with the many challenges of life in a constructive way. Because of this and the general naivety that comes with being young it can be a great challenge to overcome the many problems and changes that come our way as a young teenager. However there are plenty of ways that we can help our young teenagers out and prevent them from becoming chronically stressed or from their stress taking a physical tole on their body.

One such way to prevent the detrimental effects of stress on the body are by practicing routine healthy habits such as exercising and eating well. Exercising helps make use of any extra adrenaline or hormones that may be in our bodies and the activity and movement can burn off any restless energy. Exercising can also keep us fit and in shape which can help us respond better to the stresses we face in daily life. Eating well is also a great response to stress. When we fuel our bodies properly and in a way that nourishes them it’s much easier for us to cope with stress in our lives and we also have a lot more energy stored up to help us deal with that stress. Practicing a relaxing hobby such as a music instrument or a craft is also very helpful when i comes to stress. A hobby can provide a needed escape from any difficult circumstances and it can keep us relaxed and peaceful as well. There are also other things we can do like spending time with a family member or friends and sharing what’s going on in our lives with them. Often times the simple act of talking about our problems and challenges can help us reduce stress greatly.

Make sure your teenager knows the appropriate tools to deal with stress and they’ll be much better off for it.
